Books & Company welcomes Luis Alberto Urrea Tuesday, December 4 - 7:00 p.m. Books & Company Author Talk & Signing Like his bestseller, The Hummingbird's Daughter, Queen of America is based on Urrea's great-aunt Teresita (legendary in Mexico for her healing powers and proclaimed by many there as the "Saint of Cabora"). Urrea recounts Teresita's journey out of 19th century Mexico into 20th century America. He spent over two decades researching his subject, drawing from historical accounts and family records, many never before translated. Also the author of The Devil's Highway, Into the Beautiful North, and, of course, The Hummingbird's Daughter, Urrea has long been compared to Gabriel Garcia Marquez for creating "poetic fiction" (Los Angeles Times). He continues this tradition in his epic novel of love, loss and miracles in America. Queen of America is a spellbinding tale, heartbreaking, panoramic, and full of laughter. He is known for marrying magical realism with real history, and his early upbringing in Tijuana - his father is Mexican and his mother is American - allows him to write about subjects like immigration from a special perspective. Living with one parent from each country and having lived in both countries himself gives him unique access to both sides of the border and a strong foundation from which he can analyze the problems each country faces. Perhaps most important is Urrea's ability to capture the human element of Mexicans and immigrants.
