In Frankfurt, Egon Schneider's parents were known as the Audubon's of Europe. His father's dedication to scholarship and his mother's exquisite drawings and ways of seeing inspired him to find his own path as a successful optometrist in Frankfurt.  But as the Great War moved into the growing aggression against Jews, Egon leaves Germany for a very uncertain future in New York City.
Piecing together new lives in New York City, Egon's circle of Frankfort friends equally chide and support each other while revealing the difficulties and the joys of what is new and what is lost. But it is what Egon finds that joins together the old with the new.  Betsy Carter has written a story of immigrants and war, community and hope, and the ways in which we care for each other in the face of adversity. You will quietly finish the last page with more compassion, greater respect, and a desire to hear the stories of those who are and were once strangers.

The daughter of German immigrants, Betsy Carter is the author of the novels Swim to Me, The Orange Blossom Special, and The Puzzle King, as well as her memoir, Nothing to Fall Back On. She is also the creator and editor of New York Woman Magazine, and has worked at many other magazines, including Newsweek, Harper's Bazaar and Esquire.
