Books & Company
Join us in welcoming author and former Oconomowoc resident Gregg Voss to Books & Company for his new collection of short stories The Valley of American Shadow.
The Valley of American Shadow is a collection of 16 short stories spanning across America, reaching past ordinary and into the unexpected with characters so real that you feel for them, even the social media troll who has the tables turned by a ghost. Whether it's a dystopian K-8 school in rural Kansas with a terrible secret, or a 10-year-old in Greeley, Colorado that suspends a damaged airplane in midair, these stories blur the line between reality and the metaphysical. The characters are thrust into situations that challenge both explanation and understanding, at least in this plane of existence. What happens when a dissolving UFO attacks a religious commune in a dusty Texas county near the US-Mexican border? Or when an Ohio police officer on his first night of patrol has the devil in the back seat of his cruiser? These are the questions. The answers are in The Valley of American Shadow.
Gregg Voss is a former Oconomowoc resident and was once a reporter and editor for the Oconomowoc Enterprise weekly newspaper. A prolific fiction writer, his work has been featured in Door County Magazine, Red Fez and The Write Launch, among many others. He has been shortlisted for The Cunningham Short Story Competition 2019 from Willowdown Books. He lives in the Chicago suburbs with his wife, Dorothy, and their daughter, Emmie. During the day, he works in marketing communications/PR and in the evenings covers high school sports, much like he did at the Enterprise.
